Who we are . . .
The Center for
Empowering Communities (CEC) is a non-government organization
established to uphold, strengthen and promote people empowerment through
active participation of individuals, organizations and communities in
issues that directly affect them.
CEC believes that democratic institutions and processes will be strengthened and will find relevance in the lives of the marginalized if they are provided meaningful opportunities to participate as stakeholders and active key players in their communities or local government units (LGU's). Our Vision . . .
We envision a society…
Where human development is a reality, not just a slogan; Where the potential contributions of all individuals, regardless of age, gender and socio-economic standing, are recognized through equal access to services and opportunities for personal development and social advancement; Where members of the marginalized sectors participate in local government affairs as productive and empowered citizens towards realizing human development for a progressive society. Our Mission . . .
Active citizenship is a result of the recognition and the promotion of people empowerment, of making people aware of their inherent rights as well as their concomitant obligations as members of the citizenry. It presupposes the people’s willingness to participate as stakeholders in the future of their community and society. It is also crucial in making democratic institutions work, in demanding accountability, transparency and responsiveness from elected leaders and other institutions of government.
Working on the premise that the weakest members of society – by virtue of their age, gender and socio-economic standing in their communities – will remain vulnerable to patronage politics, manipulation and abuse if they remain hungry, ignorant and isolated, CEC will work with individuals, communities, people’s organizations, non-government organizations, the LGU’s, as well as the private sector and other stakeholders towards building the capacities of the marginalized and underprivileged for responsible political participation, genuine economic advancement and significant social solidarity. |
